Breast Care Nurses: supporting women with metastatic breast cancer

This event has past.

Location:  Webinar

Program: In person

Address: N/A

Hear from a metastatic Breast Care Nurse (BCN) about the conversations she has with the women she supports. Also learn about the results of recent research into the role BCN’s play in supporting women living with metastatic breast cancer.

Researchers at Macquarie University in Sydney have interviewed women with metastatic breast cancer, their family members and BCNs to understand the value, role and responsibilities of BCN’s supporting women living with metastatic breast cancer. They were interested to know about women’s experiences of support from BCN’s (both general and dedicated metastatic BCN’s), if women need different supports at different times, and how BCN’s help women cope with the physical and emotional challenges of living with this diagnosis. Dr Andrea Smith and Dr Marika Franklin will outline the results of their study and answer questions. Dr Andrea Smith is herself living with a diagnosis of metastatic breast cancer.

Jenny Macindoe is an experienced breast care nurse working at Peninsula Health in Frankston. Jenny was the first dedicated McGrath BCN in Victoria. She says ‘my passion is supporting people who have an incurable disease by providing an outlet outside the family unit with whom patients can express their concerns. I also offer the most relevant and up-to-date medical information and referral options based on their individual needs and circumstance.’ Jenny will speak about and answer questions about her role as a metastatic BCN.
