A cancer diagnosis has a ripple effect on the whole family and on our wider systems of support and connection, like friends and work. In this session we will look at the issues relevant for those friends and family members who’re supporting a woman with a cancer diagnosis, to also receive support for themselves.

We will start this session with a short presentation from Cancer Council Victoria who will outline the support they offer to support people and share the range of requests their service receives from them.

We also have a panel of Counterpart Peer Support Volunteers speaking about their own families’ and friends’ experiences of finding support when they were diagnosed and undergoing treatment. Some of the questions we’ll be asking the volunteers include:

  • How did their loved ones respond and what did they need?
  • Who supported the support people and what support was on offer?
  • How to communicate when everyone is stressed
  • The difficulty of asking for help.
  • The impact of changing roles within the family
  • What was most helpful and what were the main challenges?

Your participation is encouraged. We will certainly make time for your questions in this session.
